Rupert Zaragosa and JP DE Claro stood out on a trying day yesterday, shooting five-over-par 77s to win the overall championship of the NGAP’s National Doubles Championship with ease at Eastridge in Rizal.
Zaragosa and De Claro played a cut above the rest as close pursuers Ricar Candinato and Ariel Villasencio cracked under final round pressure in the event presented by the MVP Sports Foundation as part of the PLDT Group Amateur Tour.
The fancied pair tallied 302 overall after four-balls and foursomes in the first two days, winning by 11 over the Luis Castro-GJ Katigbak pair which mounted a final day charge to overtake Candinato-Villasencia for second.
Firing a 79 and 80, respectively, Castro and Katigbak pocketed the Group I title over Candinato-Villasencio, which tallied a final round 166 after scores of 79 and 87, respectively.
Zaragosa thus added another national title to his glittering collection that included the men’s and boys’ title in the same year.
Paqo Barro and Aldo Barro fired 91 and 95 and won Group II with plenty to spare after two-day leader Jing Romero-Martin Guiang withdrew from final round play.
Paqo and Aldo Barro posted a 60 stroke victory over the Yancy Siladar-Manny Abrogar pair with a 360 total. Hwang Min Jeong and Seung Eun Jeong won the ladies division by 33 shots over fellow Korean expats Koh Euan Ah-Song Min Jeong after shooting 76 and 71 for 147 and 293.
The runners-up shot rounds of 88 and 81 for 169.
