As expected, businessman Martin Lorenzo secured the presidency of the National Golf Association of the Philippines in the 2018 NGAP Annual Council Meeting and Biennial Elections at the Philippine Navy Golf Club today.

Lorenzo garnered the second highest number of votes among the 18 candidates who ran this year and was later named as NGAP’s head after the new 11-man team board convened minutes after the final tally was established and verified.

Joining him in the board who will be serving a two-year term are Aurelio “Gigi” Montinola (chairman), Jose “Pepot” Inigo (vice president), Al Panlilio (treasurer), Godofredo “Jun” Galindez (auditor) and members Jose Amado “Kit”!Angeles, Carlos “Caloy” Coscolluela, Jose “Joe” Dagdagan, Rolando “Rolly” Romero, Rodolfo “Rudy” Angus, and Shin Paul Chan.

“The first order of the day is to bring NGAP to even greater heights. Whatever gains it achieved the last few years, we will take off from there and take it to the next level,” said Lorenzo in an exclusive interview with Inquirer Golf.

“There’s so much potential in golf. I believe what lacking with our amateurs is exposure in competitions both local and international. With the right funding and employing the right coaches, we can get back lost glory,” Lorenzo said.

Also, he plans to initiate a true grassroots program especially in the provinces, where tons of talents are aplenty and untapped.

“I was raised in Del Monte in Bukidnon and that’s one place where I think we can discover kids who can become champions in the future. But we need to support them with equipment and training for them to display their skills,” he also said.

“It will not be an easy task but with smooth execution and tapping the perfect people, we can pull it off,” he added.
