Superal tops Southern Ladies
Davao – Princess Superal slowed down a bit with a 70 for 56 points but still won by a whopping 10 shots over Yuka Saso to complete her Southern Ladies’ Open ‘three-peat’ at Apo Golf here yesterday.
The 16-year old Superal failed to crack par for the third time but the field simply couldn’t keep up with her as she tallied 171 points over the tree-lined layout to rule the event presented by MVP Sports Foundation pulling away.
The victory was another great achievement for Superal, who came into the 54-hole event fresh from her triumph in the US Girls’ Junior Championship in Arizona.
And she played true to from as her earlier rounds of 58 and 57 points established firm control of the field. Saso returned 50 points for teh best finish in her young career, while Sofia Chabon clung to third spot after a 55 for 155, with Sam Martirez pocketing fourth at 147 after shooting a closing 48.
Abegail Arevalo, who opened up with 51 points to be in third spot going into the second day, sealed Team The Country Club’s sweep of the top five places by finishing another point behind Martirez after a closing 51.
Gendel Dela Cerna also completed a wire-to-wire conquest in class A action of the event forming part of the PLDT Group National Amateur and backed by the Philippine Sports Commission and Casino Filipino-Davao. Dela Cerna fired 51 points in the final round and won over Irene Shinmura by 19 points. Shinmura, who trailed the eventual champion every round, struggled to post 42 points.
The Class B crown went to Virgie Hermiston, who totalled 112, with Cecile Co finishing seven points behind.
