Manotoc-Lagman takes charge with 141 https://ngap.ph/manotoc-lagman-takes-charge-with-141-in-aggregate-play/ Fri, 29 Dec 2017 01:04:12 +0000 https://ngap.ph/?p=4032 Lester Lagman studies his line of putt on No. 6 as teammate Gab Manotoc looks on during the second day of the National Doubles Amateur Golf Championship.
Lester Lagman studies his line of putt on No. 6 as teammate Gab Manotoc looks on during the second day of the National Doubles Amateur Golf Championship.

Manotoc hit just two birdies against four bogeys in a windy day for a 36-34 round at the par-68 layout while Lagman blew a two-under card after four holes with three bogeys in the next five then dropped two more strokes late in the round for a 36-35 card.

Counting their 62 in the opening four-ball format Wednesday, Manotoc and Lagman took charge at 203, one ahead of Paolo Wong and Don Petil, who assembled a 143 for a 204 while erstwhile frontrunner Ryan Monsalve and Lanz Uy groped for form in individual format with a 146 and slipped to third at 205.

The rest stood too far behind to contend for the crown heading to the deciding two-ball, foursome (alternate shot) format of the three-day season-ending tournament organized and conducted by the National Golf Association of the Philippines and sponsored by the MVP Sports Foundation.

Rupert Zaragosa bucked tough pin placements and gunned down five birdies against two bogeys as he fired the tournament-best three-under 65 but teammate Adrian Romero limped with an 81 as they pooled a 146 for a 210, seven strokes off the pace.

Dan Cruz and Luigi Guerrero both shot 74s, their 148 giving them a two-day haul of 214 while Carlo Quimson and Aniceto Mandanas turned in a 73 and 77, respectively, for a 150 and a 216.

Gabby Malaguim and Ivan Monsalve carded a 74 and 75, respectively, for a 149 and 219 while Clare Legaspi sizzled with a two-under 66 but drew an 82 from teammate Felicia Medalla as they scored a 148 for a 214 in the premier group of the event serving as part of the PLDT Group National Amateur Golf Tour.

Meanwhile, Pierre Ticzon (80) and Allan Crisostomo (83) hiked their lead to three in Group II with a 163 for a 233 as Santino Diokno (77) and Miguel Roque (83) combined for a 160 and a 235.

Jimmy Suelo (77) and Allen Embuscado (81) shot a 158 and all but wrapped up the Group III diadem with a 230, seven strokes ahead of Edwin Abesamis and Hermie Salivio, who both made 72s for a 164 and 237. Joey Anciano (82) and Boom Coscolluela (83) assembled a 165 and lay two shots farther back at 239.

Ryan Monsalve (left) and Lanz Uy watch their rivals putt during the opening round of the National Doubles Golf Championship.

Ryan Monsalve and Lanz Uy combined for nine birdies and dominated the opening four-ball format with a 59 to seize a two-stroke lead over Paolo Wong and Don Petil in the National Doubles Amateur Golf Championship at Camp Aguinaldo Golf Club in QC yesterday.

Monsalve and Uy, who yielded the overall crown to Carl Corpus and Yuto Katsuragawa last year, broke away from a four-way tie after nine holes with five birdies at the backside of the par-68 layout, capping their romp with back-to-back birdies for a 31-28 card in best ball.

They hope to keep their charge as play shifts to aggregate today with the final round tomorrow to feature the tougher two-ball, foursome (alternate shot) format.

“We played pressure-free throughout. It’s been smooth and quite easy since even if one gets into trouble, the other will step up and save the hole, We just enjoyed it,” said Monsalve, whose partnership with Uy netted them the Group I title in last year’s staging of the season-ending tournament organized and conducted by the National Golf Association of the Philippines and sponsored by the MVP Sports Foundation.

Wong and Petil, who matched Monsalve and Uy’s 31 start, actually grabbed the lead with three straight birdies to start their backside drive but the duo slowed down and missed a couple of birdie chances, settling for a 30 and dropping to second instead with a seven-under 61.

Lester Lagman and Gab Manotoc also carded an opening 31 and birdied Nos. 11, 12 and 14 but fumbled with a bogey on No. 14 and slipped to third with a 62 in the premier division.

Many-time national champion Rupert Zaragosa and Adrian Romero also failed to sustain their hot 31 start with a birdie-bogey stint in the last nine holes and fell five strokes off the pace at 64.

Carlo Gatmaytan and Rocky Brobio pooled a 65 for fifth while the pairs of Sean Ramos-Jed Dy, Dan Cruz-Luigi Guerrero, Aniceto Mandanas-Carlo Quimson and Clare Legaspi-Felicia Medalla each shot 66s and stood seven shots behind in the event serving as part of the PLDT Group National Amateur Golf Tour.

Siblings Aldo and Paqo Barro made a 67 while the Annika Guangko-David Guangko, Kristine Torralba-Matthew Abalos and Eddie Bagtas-Leandro Bagtas tandems turned in identical 68s.

Meanwhile, Pierre Ticzon and Allan Crisostomo assembled a 70 to open a two-shot lead over Rald Sarmiento and Masaichi Otake in Group II play with Santino Diokno and Miguel Roque falling five strokes behind with a 75.

Allen Embuscado and Jimmy Suelo, on the other hand, carded a 72 to gain a one-stroke lead over Edwin Abesamis and Hermie Salibio with the Boom Coscolluela-Joey Anciano and Vic Se-Byron San Pedro tandems staying within striking distance with a 74 and 75, respectively, in Group III.

Aidric Chan (left) and Harmie Constantino hold their trophies after dominating their respective sides in Elite division of the 2017 NGAP Northern Luzon Regional Golf Championship.
Aidric Chan hobbled with a six-over 77 but still prevailed by six while Harmie Constantino beat Korean Shin Seo Yun by seven with a one-under 70 as they shared the Elite division crowns in the 2017 NGAP Northern Luzon Regional Golf Championship at Beverly Place Golf Club in Mexico, Pampanga yesterday.

After blowing the field with a 68 and 67 in the first two days, Chan slackened a bit and closed out with a 37-40 marred by six birdies and a double bogey against a lone bogey. But that hardly put a dent on his overnight 12-shot lead which proved to be too big for his rivals to overcome.

He totaled a 212, six better than Carl Corpus, who matched par 71 for a 218 while Luis Castro finally broke par with a three-under 68 to salvage third at 219 in the 54-hole championship sponsored by the MVP Sports Foundation and organized by the National Golf Association of the Philippines.

Paolo Wong shot a 70 and finished fourth at 221 while Lanz Uy also closed out with a one-under card for fifth at 224 followed by Kuresh Samanodi (79-229), Kristoffer Arevalo (76-233), Pierre Ticzon (78-236), Don Petil (82-236), and Leandro Bagtas (77-238).

Constantino, meanwhile, turned what had appeared to be a shootout into a final round blowout as the many-time national team mainstay, tied Shin after two rounds, saved her best for last and fired a 35-35 for a 215 to retain her crown in the event which served as part of the PLDT Group National Amateur Golf Tour.

Shin, who led in the first round, cracked under pressure, falling by two with a 37 start then holing out with a 40 for a 77 and a 222.

Another Korean Yang Ju Young shot a 71 to tie compatriot Kim Seo Yun, who wavered with a 73, at 227 while Kristine Torralba wound up fifth with a 231 after a 77 and Sunshine Zhang carded a 75 for a 240.

Meanwhile, August Cruz took the low gross title with a 230 while Bernard Chang bagged the low net plum with a 205 in the men’s division Group I ruled by Alan Alegre with a 231, nipping Francis Lanuza in the countback.

Rante Bambao also assembled a 230 to pocket the low gross while Jared Sto. Tomas had a 191 to cop the low net crown in Group II topped by Jose Benjamin Wenceslao, who made a 261, three ahead of Jesus Laigo.

Marianne Bustos of John Hay, on the other hand, captured the ladies handicap Open low gross crown with a 227 with Jonah Ilagan taking the low net plum with a 200.

Go settles for bronze https://ngap.ph/go-settles-for-bronze/ Thu, 24 Aug 2017 05:07:13 +0000 https://ngap.ph/?p=3626 20953683_1684957658182984_31671072910688880_nKUALA LUMPUR – Lois Kaye Go bounced back with a two-under 69 and averted a shutout for Team Philippines with a bronze medal finish in women’s golf in the 29th SEA Games at the Mines Resort and Golf Club in Serdang here yesterday.

Go gunned down three birdies against a bogey to close out with a 36-33 card at the par-71 layout, finishing with a 54-hole total of four-under 209 that included a lead-grabbing 66 in the first round.

But the Filipina bet stumbled with a 74 in the second day, enabling Thitikul Atthaya to grab the lead with a solid 66 with the young Thai ace sustaining her form and saving her best for last with a flawless eight-under 63 highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 12th.

The recent youngest winner on the Ladies European Tour totaled 14-under 199 to run away with the gold with P. Thitapa completing an impressive 1-2 finish by the Thais with a 206 after a 70.

Harmie Constantino and Junia Gabasa matched par 71s and ended up at sixth and No. 15 in the 21-player field with 215 and 223, respectively.

Rupert Zaragosa fumbled with a 73 for a 214 and wound up ninth in men’s play ruled by Hamamoto Kosuke, who capped the Thais’ sweep of the event with a 203 after a 68.

Singapore’s Marc Ong shot a 69 to clinch the silver at 204 while another Thai, N, Kammalas, took the bronze with a 205 after a 68.

Paolo Wong finally broke par with a 67 and finished 12th at 217 while Carl Corpus wound up 14th with a 219 after a 74. Jolo Magcalayo skied to a 77 and ended up 24th in a field of 40 with a 228.

Team Phl, however, vowed to bounce back in team competitions which start today.

Thitapa at the start of the golf competitions of the 29th SEA Games at the Mines Resort and Golf Club in Serdang here yesterday.

Go rattled off four straight birdies from No. 12 to anchor her near-flawless 35-31 card that put her on top of the women’s field, three ahead of the veteran Durriyah and Thitapa in a solid start that sparked hopes for Team Phl’s drive to duplicate its sweep of the individual and team golds in the 2013 SEAG in Myanmar.

Though the Phl trailed Thailand and Malaysia by one in team play, Harmie Constantino is expected to bounce back from a shaky 74 start together even as Junia Gabasa hobbled with a 75.

Organizers, however, have adopted a new match play format in team competition with the draw to depend on the top three scores of the team after the individual event.

Local ace Lau Ashley shot a 70 while fancied Thai Thithikul Atthaya also carded a two-under card to give their respective teams identical 139 aggregates, one ahead of the Phl, which pooled a 140.

Go, toughened up by her stints in the US Girls’ Juniors and the US Women’s Amateur where she reached the knockout stage, birdied two of the first eight holes but stumbled with a bogey on the ninth before running off birdies on Nos. 12, 13, 14 and 15.

Constantino sizzled early with three birdies in the first six holes but wavered with six bogeys the rest of the way, finishing with a 74, while Gabasa, whom the National Golf Association of the Philippines fielded in place of Yuka Saso, struggled with just one birdie against five bogeys.

Rupert Zaragosa likewise put himself in early contention in the men’s individual play as the veteran campaigner came away with a seven-under 64 to trail Thai N. Kammalas by one.

Zaragosa actually took charge with a stirring six-under 30 start, spiked by five straight birdies from No. 4 but he slowed down at the back with two birdies against a bogey while Kammalas fought back with five birdies in the last seven holes, including the last three to snatch the lead with a 63.

The other Pinoy bets, however, groped for form with Carl Corpus matching par 71, Jolo Magcalayo limping with a 77 and Paolo Wong turning in a 78.

The Thai boys proved solid with Hammamoto Kosuke and C. Witchayanon both shooting 67s and the fourth player K. Sadom carding a 69.

Malarayat’s composite course.

Counting his first round score of 74, Rosal assembled a 145 aggregate and moved closer to nailing his first seniors Open crown as Hernandez shot 10 strokes worse than his opening 72, his 82 dropping him to second at 154.

Abe Avena, who ruled last year’s staging of the event held as part of the PLDT Group National Amateur Golf Tour and backed by the MVP Sports Foundation, Cignal, Metro Pacific Investments, Srixon and Cobra, pooled a 155 after an 80 while former national champion Rolly Viray carded a 76 and moved to joint fourth with Jose Mari Hechanova, who turned in a 78, at 158.

Korean Shin Seo Yun, on the other hand, pulled away in the women’s Elite Open, matching par 72 for a 147 and a four-stroke lead over compatriot Kwon Seo Yon and local bet Margiela Atienza, who both shot 75s for 151s. Kristine Torralba failed to rebound and shot a second 77 for a 154.

In other Mid-Am classes, Philip Lindog carded a 76 and grabbed a one-stroke lead over Jerome Hernandez (77) with Walter Lacuesta in third with an 81 in Division I; while Boom Coscolluela made an 87 for a two-shot edge over John Marc Andaya (89) and Ferdinand Garana (89) in Division II.

Peter Tyler Po and Yuka Saso both fought back from one-hole deficits after the morning play as they dominated the final 18 holes, pulling off 4&3 and 3&2 victories over Jolo Magcalayo and Harmie Constantino, respectively, to crown themselves the 2017 Philippine Amateur Open Match Play champions at the Orchard’s Player course in Dasmariñas, Cavite yesterday.

The ninth-ranked Po came out smoking at resumption of the grueling 36-hole duel in scorching heat, birdying and taking Nos. 3, 6 and 11 to wrest control then finished off his second-seeded rival with a par on the 15th to wrap up the match and record the biggest win of his young golfing career.

“Winning this major tournament for the first time brings me to another level of experience. It will surely make me tougher,” said the 17-year-old Po, who has previously settled for club junior championships. “Playing with tough players is also a great experience and winning over them is really unforgettable.”

The victory capped the Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu student’s remarkable campaign in the country’s premier match play event sponsored by the MVP Sports Foundation. He humbled top seed Rupert Zaragosa in the quarters then repulsed last year’s champion Noel Langamin in the Final Four.

Magcalayo, who dominated Luis Castro in the semis, failed to match Po’s fiery afternoon charge with the latter squaring off the match with a birdie on No. 3, the 21st hole, moving 1-up with another birdie on No. 6 and posting a two-hole lead with a double-bogey on the ninth as Magcalayo dropped three strokes on the par-5 hole.

Po then went 4-up with a par and a birdie to start the final nine but Magcalayo pounced on the former’s double-bogey mishap on No. 13 to close within three, only to yield another hole – the match and the championship – with a bogey on No. 15.

In women’s final of the event organized and conducted by the National Golf Association of the Philippines, Saso drew level with a birdie on the 19th hole (No. 1), and took two of the next three holes, bogeyed No. 9 but won Nos. 32nd and 33rd holes then matched Constantino’s par on the 34th to clinch the victory and complete a sweep of the country’s major amateur championships after scoring a record 13-shot romp in last week’s Phl Am Strokeplay.

Meanwhile, the NGAP has cancelled the Phl Junior Match Play set next week.

The 16-year-old Saso, who eased out Kayla Nocum in the semis, also bagged the gold medal in the third World Junior Girls Championship in Canada late last year while powering the Philippines, with Constantino, who beat Kristine Torralba in the Final Four, and Sofia Legaspi, to the team championship.

Langamin took third place with a 3&2 win over Castro, while Nocum routed Torralba, 4&3, to clinch third place honors in the women’s side of the event held as part of the PLDT Group National Amateur Golf Tour and backed by Cignal and Metro Pacific Investment.
